The Romantic Tale Behind the Ibbetson Villiers

The Ibbetson Villiers suite is inspired by the love story of Captain Charles Ibbetson and Lady Adela Corisande Maria Child Villiers. In the late autumn of 1845, 17-year-old Lady Adela, daughter of the Earl of Jersey, eloped with the dashing Captain, who was on leave from the 11th Hussars regiment stationed in Dublin.

The couple’s journey began in Brighton, where they boarded a train to London, then travelled onward to York and Carlisle. From there, they hired a carriage to Gretna Green. At Gretna Hall, their wedding was officiated by John Linton, the “Blacksmith Priest,” with Mrs. Linton and a Carlisle postillion serving as witnesses. Coincidentally, a group of engineers planning a railway extension was also present for lunch at the Hall that day.

Lady Adela’s romantic escape mirrored that of her grandmother, Sarah Anne Child, who had made the same journey 63 years earlier in 1782 to marry John Fane, the 10th Earl of Westmorland. With such a legacy of love and elopement in her family, Lady Adela’s mother eventually accepted Captain Ibbetson as her son-in-law.
